Julianna M. Malis, Attorney
Julianna M. Malis is an estate planning and elder law attorney helping families plan for life, deal with death, resolve conflict, protect assets and preserve a lasting legacy. Prior to founding Anacapa Estate Planning & Elder Law, she was a consumer protection attorney and civil litigator. While two of Julianna’s goals are to keep her clients out of court and facilitate family harmony, she can be an effective advocate and negotiator when needed.
“In our office, we are passionate about helping people to protect their assets from taxes, lawsuits, relatives, nursing home costs — anything that threatens their savings and property,” Julianna says. “We also help people arrange their affairs so they will avoid emotional pain and family conflict in leaving their wealth to their heirs, and pay the least possible amount in taxes and fees.”
After practicing law for more than 20 years, and as a wife, mother with a blended family and caregiver for her terminally ill mother, Julianna has a natural understanding of the importance of protecting families and estate planning which could be used to make a difference in the lives of her clients. She has helped many clients set up wills, trusts and powers of attorney for financial and medical decisions. She helps protect assets from the devastating costs of nursing homes and other long-term care as well as experience with qualifying both married couples and single people for Medi-Cal benefits. She is also accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs and advises clients about Veterans’ benefits to help pay for the cost of in-home care and assisted living.
Julianna has compassion and concern for clients who are caring for a chronically ill spouse or parent, or who want to plan for their own future care. Her intelligent and heart-felt guidance for her clients is reflected in each and every estate plan prepared. She truly enjoys helping others.
After excelling academically at McGeorge School of Law (University of the Pacific), where she graduated in 1996, she went on to earn a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Taxation, with an emphasis in Estate Planning in 1999. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from UC Santa Barbara in 1993. She is licensed to practice law in all courts in California. Julianna is an active member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA); ElderCounsel, WealthCounsel, the Trusts & Estates Section of the California State Bar, ProVisors, Association for Senior Care, and Coalition for Compassionate Care.
Julianna enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Sean (who is also the firm’s Client Services Director), their children and grandson, and their Labrador Gus who you may meet when you visit our office.
Sean T. Malis, Client Services Director
Sean T. Malis is our Client Services Director. He is the main point of contact for our clients and ensures that all of our clients are always happy with our services.
Before running Anacapa Estate Planning & Elder Law, Sean spent over 25 years working for California State Parks, as State Park Interpreter at a historical site providing excellent customer experience and service for thousands of park visitors. He also serves as a military officer in the Army Reserves. Sean has a Bachelor’s Degree in History from CSU Long Beach and is a credentialed Social Studies teacher.
Sean developed a keen interest in helping the elderly after his dear grandmother ‘Nonna’ was diagnosed with Alzheimers and needed assistance. He took the lead and hired an elder law attorney who was able to secure Medi-Cal benefits to protect his grandparents’ life savings from nursing home care costs. He also helped with much of the caregiving for his late mother in-law before she passed away in 2016. Sean is now studying to become a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) and will work closely with our Geriatric Care Advisor.
A native of Santa Barbara, Sean enjoys restoring old vehicles, other historical pursuits, and 4-wheeling.
Jamie Zimmerman, Geriatric Care Advisor
Jamie Zimmerman is our contract Geriatric Care Advisor and Patient Advocate. She has a Masters of Science in Gerontology and helps our clients who need assisted living, in-home care or nursing home care obtain the best care available, and helps our nursing home clients maintain their highest possible level of psycho-social well-being.
Prior to working with our team, Jamie spent nearly a decade serving older adults and people with disabilities as a social services and program coordinator in both nursing homes and for nonprofit groups. She came to work with our team with a desire to serve in a bigger way, to create more direct change in the elder care industry. She is familiar with most care facilities in the Santa Barbara area and has a network of allied senior industry professionals including geriatric care managers, daily money managers, home care/companion agencies, and homebound physicians and therapists. All of the professionals with whom we work are vetted out to ensure that they subscribe to the same white-glove level of service as provided by Anacapa Estate Planning & Elder Law.
Jamie also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Alabama and is a registered Yoga teacher and certified Meditation teacher. She is dedicated to our holistic process to provide support and advocacy to our clients and their family members.
